The film will be followed by a sequel.
Godzilla vs. Kong pits two of the world's most feared monsters against one other in a fight that might decide the destiny of the whole planet. Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has created a special and deep relationship, joins Kong and his guards on a risky adventure to locate his rightful home. When Godzilla unleashes his fury, they find themselves in the path of the monster, whose trail of destruction cuts over the whole planet. Despite the titanic battle sparked by unknown forces, the mystery surrounding Earth's interior has only just begun to be unraveled!
However, when Jia comes to see Kong and offers him a doll, the Titan, knowing that he is stuck within the biodome, finds out and tosses a tree at it.
Walter Simmons, Apex's founder and CEO, enlists the help of Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan's brother was murdered by a massive anti-gravity field in the tunnel while attempting to explore the Hollow Earth. Apex, according to Walter, has created ships called Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles (HEAVs) that can survive the gravitational pull of the Earth.
Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source because Skull Island can no longer contain him and allow him to survive (because Kong has grown too large). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was transferred off Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan convinces her that they must undertake this mission in order to end Godzilla's rampage and to find Kong a new home.
At this point, Jia senses Godzilla's presence by feeling vibrations through the ship as the Titan arrives and attacks the military before capsizing the barge, nearly drowning Kong as well as the others inside. Fortunately, Nathan manages to free Kong by unlocking his chains, allowing him to battle Godzilla underwater long enough for him to swim to the surface and flip the barge back on its head, saving the group from drowning. Kong leaps onto a nearby aircraft copyright to face Godzilla, who climbs aboard to face Kong. The two Titans exchange violent blows before fighter jets distract Godzilla enough for Kong to push him back into the ocean. Godzilla fires his atomic breath from under the copyright, but Kong manages to leap off to evade the blast, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and drags him into the depths of the ocean intending to drown the Titan.
However, when Godzilla is paralyzed by deep charges, Kong is able to surface for air, thereby breaking off their combat.
There, the three disembark and discover Apex's ultimate weapon "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical version of Godzilla operated by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's main technological officer Ren Serizawa. As soon as Mechagodzilla is started, Walter releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the room. The beast is on the point of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and stopped by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to slice the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take cover in a tiny hatch. The test, however, is cut short as the mecha shuts down shortly thereafter owing to power supply limits.
While Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV after hearing Godzilla's roar and accepting Godzilla's latest challenge, Kong takes the opportunity to make his way through the gap formed by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong. Arriving in Hong Kong, King takes on Godzilla once again, this time getting the upper hand over the Titan, eventually shoveling his axe down Godzilla's throat to prevent him from launching his atomic breath.. Even when Godzilla takes the axe and tosses it away, King Kuhn realizes that his axe can not only deflect Godzilla's atomic breath but also absorb the explosion. After evading Godzilla's strikes with the help of Hong Kong's skyscrapers and his superior agility, Kong returns to his axe and unleashes an explosive blast that knocks both Titans to the ground, leading Nathan to assume that Kong had won the second battle.
Kong and Godzilla both recover and get back to their feet, with Godzilla searching for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself on a skyscraper. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold intending to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong subdued and pinned down, Godzilla furiously roars at his opponent in a show of dominance, but Kong, defeated, angrily roars in defiance against Godzilla.
While Josh and Bernie try unsuccessfully to deactivate the rampaging robot remotely and Madison tries to summon Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle. At one point, both fire their energy beams at each other, which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia detects a slowing of his pulse. Ilene explains that they are unable to produce a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, recalling Maia's earlier statement about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.
The two Titans work together to stem the tide, but the robot proves to be more powerful than their combined force and defeats them. Kong reclaims his axe, which he had lost during his previous encounter with Godzilla, and strikes numerous hits on Mechagodzilla, but his weapon, having lost its charge, is worthless against the robot, which tries to kill Kong with its tail drill. All appears lost for Kong and Godzilla, while Bernie, recognizing he and the others have no choice but to drink, takes out a flask of bourbon and suggests they all have a drink. Josh, on the other hand, takes the flask from Bernie's grip and short-circuits Mechagodzilla's controls by dumping the contents of the drink all over the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt for a brief while, allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and reclaim the upper hand.
